Beta Bugs, an Edinburgh, UK-based insect genetics company, recently secured £1.72M in funding. The funding round was led by The Tricapital Syndicate and included participation from SIS Ventures, Scottish Enterprise, Beeches Group, Climate.vc, and existing shareholders. With this investment, Beta Bugs aims to expand its production, sale, and supply of Black Soldier Fly eggs and larvae to the insect farming sector. These insects serve as a sustainable protein source for animal feed, offering a viable alternative to current methods.
CEO and Founder Thomas Farrugia established Beta Bugs in 2017.
The company specializes in selective breeding programs and operates an egg production site for the Black Soldier Fly. This particular insect is farmed to provide a sustainable protein source for aquaculture, pork, and poultry feed. Additionally, Black Soldier Flies can be reared using various waste streams, including agricultural and food waste.
Black Soldier Fly farming offers a green, circular, and regionally produced solution to the detrimental effects caused by the production of soy meal and fishmeal. These traditional sources of protein contribute significantly to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and overfishing. By promoting the use of insects as an alternative protein source, Beta Bugs is actively addressing these environmental challenges and working towards a more sustainable future.
