Open Cosmos Raises $50M for Satellite Tech Expansion
Open Cosmos, a Harwell, UK-based space tech company, recently announced that it has raised $50 million in Series B funding. The funding round saw participation from several notable investors, including ETF Partners, Trill Impact, A&G, Accenture Ventures, Banco Santander InnoEnergy Climate Tech Fund, Claret Capital Partners, Taavet Hinrikus, and Kheng Nam Lee. With this new influx of capital, Open Cosmos plans to accelerate its growth, expand internationally, and continue delivering innovative solutions to the market.
Founded in 2015 by CEO Rafel Jorda Siquier, Open Cosmos is dedicated to simplifying access to space by designing, building, and operating satellites.
Their mission is to empower organizations worldwide to leverage satellite data in order to solve critical challenges. The applications of satellite technology are vast and varied, with potential uses ranging from measuring greenhouse gases and monitoring global temperature trends to assessing the impact of natural disasters and detecting oil spills.
Open Cosmos has an exciting lineup of satellites set to launch in the coming months. One notable satellite, MANTIS, funded through UKSA and in partnership with ESA, will provide high-resolution imagery for monitoring logistics, energy infrastructure, and natural resources. Another satellite, IOD6, developed in collaboration with the Satellite Applications Catapult, will focus on monitoring the Atlantic coastal and maritime areas. Additionally, PLATERO, contributed by Spain, will combine Earth Observation and IoT capabilities to monitor biodiversity and provide real-time insights during natural catastrophes.
