Oriole Networks, a London, UK-based startup using light to train LLMs, recently announced that they have raised an impressive £10M in Seed funding. The funding round was led by UCL Technology Fund, Clean Growth Fund, XTX Ventures, and Dorilton Ventures, with support from Innovate UK Investor Partnership. This infusion of capital will be used by the company to further enhance AI performance and increase adoption of their innovative technology.
Founded in 2023 by UCL scientists Professor George Zervas, Alessandro Ottino, and Joshua Benjamin, along with CEO James Regan, Oriole Networks has created a unique method of employing light to connect numerous AI chips together.
This groundbreaking approach allows for the consolidation of power from individual graphics processing units (GPUs) into a powerful "super-brain". This super-brain can then be utilized to train advanced Large Language Models at a much faster rate, with just a fraction of the latency traditionally experienced and while consuming significantly less energy.
As a spinout from University College London, Oriole Networks has licensed its intellectual property through UCL's technology transfer company, UCLB. By utilizing this cutting-edge technology, the company is making significant strides in the field of AI training. With the recent funding secured, Oriole Networks is well-positioned to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of artificial intelligence.
