Solasta Bio, an innovative agri-biotech company based in Glasgow, Scotland, has successfully secured $14 million in Series A funding. This significant financial round has now brought the total amount raised by the company to $19 million. The funding round was led by notable investors, including Forbion, FMC Ventures, and Corteva Catalyst. In addition to these new backers, existing investors such as Cavallo Ventures, Rubio Impact Ventures, Scottish Enterprise, UKi2S, SIS Ventures, and the University of Glasgow also played a crucial role in this funding achievement. In conjunction with this investment, Joy Faucher from Forbion will join the company’s board of directors, further strengthening the team’s expertise and strategic guidance.
The primary objective behind this investment is to accelerate the development of Solasta Bio's groundbreaking peptide-based, nature-inspired bioinsecticides.
Co-founded by CEO Shireen Davies and Chief Scientific Officer Prof. Julian Dow, the company has developed a cutting-edge technology platform that focuses on creating insect control agents that are derived from natural sources, as opposed to relying on synthetic chemicals. This innovative approach not only meets the efficacy standards of existing agricultural chemicals but also addresses a pressing global demand for sustainable and effective crop protection solutions. By selectively targeting insect pests, these bioinsecticides aim to safeguard vital pollinators such as bees, thereby promoting a healthier ecosystem in agricultural settings.
Solasta Bio’s technology platform is versatile and can be employed to tackle a wide range of pest issues across various applications, including both crop and non-crop areas such as stored grain. The successful Series A funding comes on the heels of an impressive trials season in 2023, during which the company’s insect control agents demonstrated performance that is on par with, or superior to, commercial standards. This testing took place across more than twenty field trials involving multiple crops in regions such as Europe, the UK, and the United States, highlighting the efficacy and potential of Solasta Bio's offerings in real-world agricultural conditions. With this funding, the company is poised to continue its innovations and contribute significantly to the future of sustainable agriculture.
