Univa Health has successfully made strides in the healthtech sector by raising an impressive £1 million in a pre-seed investment round. This funding was led by YZR Capital, a prominent investment firm based in Germany, and supported by Austria-based Calm/Storm Ventures, both of which are recognized as two of Europe’s most active investors in the health technology space. The capital will be pivotal in developing and commercializing Univa's innovative digital care platform, which aims to revolutionize how healthcare systems address and manage eating disorders. This initiative is not just about enhancing treatment options—it is fundamentally about improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from these disorders as well as their families. As part of the funding utilization, Univa is set to initiate its first clinical study in collaboration with the UK's National Health Service (NHS) in October, signaling an optimistic leap toward practical implementation.
Co-founded by healthcare entrepreneurs Rich Andrews and Jose Santos, Univa is addressing the urgent challenges in the landscape of eating disorder treatment.
Over the past five years, there has been a staggering increase in hospital admissions related to eating disorders, with a reported rise of 84% in the UK and an alarming 121% in the US. These statistics underscore a pressing need for accessible and effective healthcare solutions, especially considering that many existing treatment methods rely on standard one-size-fits-all approaches. Data indicates that approximately half of the individuals with eating disorders often do not respond to traditional treatments, highlighting the critical necessity for personalized care tailored to individual needs. In 2023, nearly 30,000 people in the UK alone were hospitalized due to eating disorders, and unfortunately, the NHS is only capable of providing care for 10% of adults experiencing these disorders, thus leaving a significant portion without support.
“The widening gap between the need for care and available resources, along with the lack of personalized treatment options, urgently requires a radical rethink of how eating disorder care is provided,” says Rich Andrews, co-founder and CEO of Univa. The company's vision is focused on transforming care pathways while providing tools that empower clinicians, aiming to achieve meaningful results that could ultimately keep individuals out of hospitals and enhance long-term recovery. The platform that Univa is establishing encompasses a variety of digital tools designed to improve the management, monitoring, and treatment of eating disorders. These tools include individualized therapeutic programs, AI-driven health monitoring features, and shared narratives from individuals with personal experiences in overcoming these challenges. By actively involving families in the treatment process, Univa is not only striving to maximize outcomes but also alleviating some of the pressure currently faced by clinical teams. With a commitment to addressing one of the most complex and underserved areas in healthcare, Univa stands poised to make a meaningful impact.
