This article covers Foundational, a data startup, which has raised £8.2m in a pre-seed funding round. The funding will support expansion of its ground-station network, in-house manufacturing and data-platform development to deliver higher-precision positioning data for satellite operators, Earth observation users and sectors such as maritime, aviation and telecommunications.
Foundational, a data startup delivering highly precise positioning data for satellite applications, has raised £8.2 million in a pre-seed funding round. The cash will be used to expand a ground-station network, bring manufacturing of space-based hardware in-house, scale production of retroreflector products and further develop its data platform.
Low Earth orbit is becoming congested with satellites and debris, increasing collision risk for systems that underpin navigation, communications and critical infrastructure on the ground. The European Space Agency’s 2026 Space Environment Report recorded around 45,000 objects tracked in orbit at the end of 2025, roughly 11,300 active payloads and an estimated 1.5 million pieces of debris between 1cm and 10cm — each capable of causing catastrophic fragmentation.
Foundational’s approach aims to make Satellite Laser Ranging — a measurement method capable of millimetre-level precision — usable at commercial scale. If it delivers on cost and automation claims, the service could provide higher-precision position data for satellite operators, Earth observation users and sectors such as maritime, aviation and telecommunications that rely on resilient positioning.
Foundational automates and scales Satellite Laser Ranging by combining three components into a single, vertically integrated product: satellite-mounted retroreflectors, automated ground-based laser stations and a software platform that processes and delivers ranging data.
The company says its automated stations are weatherproof and designed to operate as a network rather than as standalone sites, and that the system can be up to 30 times less expensive than legacy stations. Foundational also plans to vertically integrate manufacturing for its retroreflectors and increase production as it grows its ground network. The technology has more than 16 years of flight heritage across supported missions and is already being used by a mix of government, institutional and commercial customers.
The round was backed by Inflection, BACKED, Final Frontier, Adjacent and Type One Ventures.
Investors are backing Foundational as a provider of foundational space infrastructure — hardware, ground access and data — intended to support navigation, space traffic management and Earth observation. The company cites customers and partners that include multiple low Earth orbit constellation operators, the European Space Agency, several United Kingdom government departments and agencies, established aerospace manufacturers, research institutes and NewSpace firms developing commercial space technologies.
In the announcement, Alexander Lange, Founding Partner at Inflection, said:
Almost everything in orbit, and a surprising amount on the ground, depends on knowing exactly where things are. Existing measurement technology isn't suitable for the next space era or the rise of physical AI and its navigation challenges. Foundational is rebuilding it as a commercial network with flying hardware and paying customers, rooted in decades of scientific research the team has been contributing to.
If you're researching potential backers in this space:
Foundational was founded in 2025 by Hira Virdee and Dave Gooding to commercialise laser-ranging technology that traces back to Lumi Space, which Virdee founded in 2018 with support from the European Space Agency and UK Space Agency. The new company aims to transition the research-grade technique into a repeatable commercial service.
In the announcement, Hira Virdee, Co-founder & CEO at Foundational, said:
Every time you tap your card, check your map or make a phone call, you're relying on satellite infrastructure - but the technology we use to track exactly where satellites are hasn't kept up with the explosion of the space economy. Satellite Laser Ranging is the gold standard, and is one of the most precise measurement tools humanity has built, capable of pinpointing a satellite to within millimetres, but until now it's been too costly and too complex to use at scale. Foundational is changing that. By bringing the hardware, ground network and data platform together under one roof, we're rebuilding a critical layer of space infrastructure for the commercial era. This investment lets us expand our global network, putting precision positioning data in the hands of satellite operators and governments worldwide, and laying the groundwork for new data products that will benefit life here on Earth.
Foundational’s bet sits at the intersection of hardware manufacturing, ground infrastructure and data services — an area investors and governments have increasingly targeted as satellite deployments scale. The company’s customers already include national agencies and the European Space Agency, signalling alignment with public-sector priorities on space safety and resilience.
If Foundational can deliver lower-cost, networked laser-ranging services at scale, it could become a data provider for navigation augmentation, space traffic control and high-precision Earth observation — markets that matter to European telecoms, logistics and national infrastructure. The pre-seed raise follows a broader trend of commercialisation in the European space sector, where private funding is beginning to support infrastructure that previously relied largely on research programmes and government labs.
