This article covers 52North, a University of Cambridge spin-out biotech startup, which has raised £3.2m in a grant funding round to advance clinical validation and regulatory progress for Neutrocheck. The funding aims to support the startup's development and UK market introduction of a rapid finger-prick test to help triage chemotherapy patients at risk of neutropenic sepsis and reduce unnecessary emergency visits and pressure on hospital services.
52North, a University of Cambridge spin-out biotech startup, has raised £3.2 million in a grant funding round to push clinical validation and regulatory progress for Neutrocheck, a rapid finger‑prick blood test intended to triage chemotherapy patients at risk of neutropenic sepsis. The funding will help move the company from development towards UK market introduction, a step that could reduce unnecessary emergency visits and ease pressure on hospital services.
Neutropenic sepsis drives tens of thousands of emergency hospital visits each year in the UK, and research suggests roughly two in five of these presentations may be avoidable. A point‑of‑care test that can quickly stratify risk has the potential to reduce unnecessary admissions, lower patient anxiety and free up overstretched emergency departments and oncology services.
The new financing is targeted at clinical validation, regulatory milestones and commercial preparation in the UK. The round brings 52North’s total equity raised to more than £7.5 million.
At the heart of 52North’s work is Aster, a proprietary biomarker detection platform designed to take diagnostic insight out of hospital settings and closer to patients and their care teams. Neutrocheck is the first application of Aster: a rapid, finger‑prick blood test intended to enable remote triaging of patients receiving chemotherapy who may be developing neutropenic sepsis.
The company positions Neutrocheck as a tool for faster risk assessment at or near home, supporting earlier intervention and more informed decisions about whether a hospital visit is required. If clinical validation and regulatory approval follow, the device could change pathways for urgent cancer care by reducing false alarms and prioritising resources.
The £3.2 million round includes a grant from Innovate UK’s Investor Partnerships programme and new capital from institutional backers. Macmillan Ventures, the venture arm of Macmillan Cancer Support, led the deal, and Hargreave Hale AIM VCT joined as a new investor with a £1.0 million commitment, described by 52North as the largest investment from a new investor in the company’s history. Existing investors participating include Cedars Sinai Intellectual Property Company, Cancer Research Horizons, the University of Cambridge and OKG Capital.
In the announcement, Felix Litzkow, Head of Macmillan Ventures at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:
52North's platform is exactly the kind of innovation Macmillan Ventures was created to back – a technology that has the very real potential to spare people going through cancer treatment the anxiety of avoidable emergency hospital admissions and give them a greater sense of confidence and control during their treatment. This is the first investment we have led, and we are proud to do so alongside partners who share our commitment to turning the most promising cancer care innovations of today, into better cancer care for tomorrow.
In the announcement, Anna Salim, Portfolio Manager at Hargreave Hale AIM VCT, said:
52North combines a differentiated diagnostics platform with a clear pathway to addressing a costly and clinically important problem in cancer care. Neutrocheck® has the potential to enable faster risk stratification for patients receiving chemotherapy, improving outcomes while easing pressure on healthcare systems. We believe the company is at an important point in its development, and we are delighted to join a strong syndicate of healthcare investors and strategic partners in supporting its next stage of growth.

In the announcement, Umaima Ahmad, Co‑founder & CEO at 52North, said:
This round is another powerful vote of confidence in our platform and the team behind it, and our focus on delivering practical and innovative solutions to address major and meaningful gaps in healthcare. To have Macmillan lead its first ever deal, and to welcome Hargreave Hale with the largest commitment from a new investor to date, tells us the mission to transform urgent cancer care is one that our partners share. The investment will enable us to advance clinical validation, progress regulatory milestones and prepare Neutrocheck® for market launch, bringing us closer to a future where patients can access faster, more convenient and more personalised urgent cancer care.
Ahmad’s comments underline the immediate priorities: complete clinical studies, secure regulatory clearance and prepare commercial channels in the UK.
The deal sits at the intersection of diagnostics innovation and growing demand for remote and community‑based urgent care solutions. It also reflects targeted philanthropy and institutional backing for cancer care technologies that promise system‑level benefits as well as patient impact. The involvement of Innovate UK and a health charity’s venture arm points to continuing public and third‑sector roles in de‑risking early clinical development for diagnostics.
For UK biotech, the announcement highlights ongoing investor interest in diagnostics that shift care out of hospitals and into community or home settings, a trend accelerated by capacity pressures in the NHS and interest in decentralised care models.
The outcome of 52North’s clinical validation and regulatory pathway will determine how quickly Neutrocheck can be deployed in the UK and potentially scaled across European markets, where similar pressures on emergency services and cancer pathways make rapid triage tools a clear priority.
