Xapien, a legaltech startup, has raised £41.4m in a growth funding round to accelerate international expansion and push its AI-driven approach to third‑party due diligence. The funding comes as organisations confront growing blind spots in vendor and counterparty risk, and follows more than 350% revenue growth for Xapien over the past two years.
Business relationships are a persistent source of operational and compliance risk, yet many organisations lack the capacity to assess them comprehensively. Xapien highlights that only around 30% of organisations have the bandwidth to evaluate even half of their counterparties. By promising broader coverage and faster results, the company aims to reduce those blind spots at a time when regulators and boards are pushing for more demonstrable control over third‑party risk.
The startup reports rapid commercial traction: 350 clients and partners across 15 countries, and the United States already accounts for roughly half of its revenue. That adoption suggests demand from multinational corporations, law firms, private banks and professional services firms for tools that scale diligence without adding headcount.
Xapien provides an AI‑native due diligence platform that aggregates public data sources — open web content, corporate records, sanctions lists and media in multiple languages — and resolves ambiguous matches among similarly named people and entities. The platform returns sourced, auditable reports in minutes rather than days and flags items that need human review, which Xapien says lets analyst teams focus on higher‑risk, complex cases.
Clients report that up to 90% of onboarding cases can be fully automated. Xapien is also piloting a live monitoring product, Xapien Live, designed to move organisations from static, periodic checks to continuous surveillance of counterparty risk.
Users include Greenberg Traurig (a global law firm), ABB (an industrial technology group), Dow Jones Risk & Compliance (a data provider for compliance workflows) and KPMG (a professional services firm). These customers illustrate the platform’s relevance to legal teams, compliance functions and advisory firms that need auditable, repeatable diligence workflows.
Joel Lange, EVP and General Manager, Risk and Enterprise at Dow Jones, said:
For too long, compliance teams have had to choose between the depth of their research and the speed at which they need to act. Xapien shows that automation can deliver both, helping organisations conduct rigorous due diligence more efficiently and make faster, smarter risk‑based decisions.
The £41.4m growth round is led by Spectrum Equity, with existing investor YFM Equity Partners also participating.
Spectrum Equity is a US growth equity firm with a track record in risk and compliance technology; its representative portfolio investments in the space include World‑Check and Verafin. The firm’s investment thesis emphasises backing software and data businesses that can scale internationally and automate complex workflows. In this instance Spectrum’s support is positioned to help Xapien expand its US footprint and operational capacity.
YFM Equity Partners is an existing backer that participated in the round, maintaining continuity from earlier financing.
Adam Margolin, Managing Director at Spectrum Equity, added:
Xapien represents a rare opportunity for Spectrum to back a team with deep domain expertise that has been laser focused on harnessing innovative AI technology to transform and automate enhanced due diligence. Xapien is fast emerging as a new standard for counterparty risk management, and we are excited to support Chris, Dan and Shaun in this next stage of growth.
The investment will be used primarily to grow Xapien’s US presence; the company plans to expand its Boston office and relocate the CEO and other leaders to support that market push.
If you're researching potential backers in this space:
Xapien was founded in 2018 by Dan Secretan and Shaun O'Mahony; Chris Green joined as CEO in 2022. All three have backgrounds in BAE Systems’ financial crime and national security divisions, reflecting the product’s roots in intelligence and investigative workflows.
Chris Green, CEO of Xapien, said:
Third‑party due diligence has remained stubbornly manual for twenty years. Hence, businesses have had to ration their scrutiny to a subset of relationships with one‑off checks at the point of onboarding, leaving them massively exposed. This funding lets Xapien pursue its mission to give compliance, legal, and procurement teams full visibility on every counterparty, all the time, giving organisations the confidence to move at speed.
That operational focus — combining name resolution, multilingual sourcing and auditable outputs — is designed to fit regulated environments where documentation and traceability are essential.
The deal sits at the intersection of two trends: rising regulatory and board scrutiny of third‑party risk, and investor appetite for AI tools that automate repeatable, data‑intensive compliance tasks. For legaltech startups and their customers, the promise is to shift compliance from a costly, periodic exercise to a continuous, scalable capability.
As a UK‑founded business expanding aggressively into the US, Xapien’s raise also reflects a broader pattern of European and UK companies using growth capital to accelerate transatlantic scaling. The funding underscores continued investor interest in compliance and legaltech solutions that can serve global enterprises across differing regulatory regimes.
