This article covers Universal Quantum, a quantum engineering startup, which has raised £75.7m in a series A funding round to accelerate its modular approach to building larger, error‑corrected quantum computers and to expand internationally. The funding will support engineering, international R&D hubs and commercial activity to advance modular, utility‑scale quantum hardware and strengthen the UK and global quantum ecosystem.
Universal Quantum has raised £75.7m in a series A funding round to accelerate its modular approach to building larger, error-corrected quantum computers and to expand internationally. The raise — the largest series A recorded for a quantum firm headquartered in the UK — will fund engineering, international R&D hubs and commercial activity as the company pushes toward practical, utility-scale machines.
The size of the round underlines growing institutional interest in quantum hardware that targets scalability rather than incremental qubit counts. Universal Quantum’s funding will support R&D outside Europe and commercial expansion, signalling that UK-founded quantum engineering can attract large pools of capital for long-horizon hardware development.
The company is already delivering on an engineering contract with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) valued at £58.3m, a concrete customer engagement that reduces technical and commercial risk compared with purely speculative research funding.
Universal Quantum builds machines from many small trapped-ion modules that are tiled together to increase the overall number of usable qubits. The company emphasises a modular, manufacturable route to larger systems, avoiding approaches that rely on bulky lasers, extensive cooling infrastructure or photonic interconnects.
Key elements of the stack cited by the company include a patented interconnect technology, advanced integrated chips, chiplet arrays and control systems intended to lower engineering risk and speed assembly of larger architectures. The technical aim is to deliver the fidelity and modularity required for fault-tolerant quantum computing rather than simply increasing raw qubit counts.
The round brings together a geographically diverse syndicate of sovereign, institutional, deep tech and quantum-specialist backers. Lead investors and participants include DCVC and Firgun Ventures (co-leads), EDBI, Artal (advised by Invus), Integral GlobalTech, Main Sequence, Hostplus, NGS Super, IAG Capital, EdenBase, Eigenstate Holdings, SiteGround Capital, Dave Baszucki (founder and CEO of Roblox), Nauta Capital and The Venture Collective.
Lazard, Inc. acted as exclusive financial advisor to Universal Quantum.
In the announcement, Zeynep Korutürk, Founding & Managing Partner of Firgun Ventures, said:
Universal Quantum brings together world-class scientific leadership with an exceptionally clear approach to quantum computing. Having laid some of the earliest foundations for large-scale trapped-ion architectures, Sebastian and Winfried are true pioneers in the field. With Europe under pressure to prove it can compete on frontier technologies, we are proud to invest in a European company that has grown into a global player, one that is well positioned to help define the future of industrial-scale quantum computing.
In the announcement, James Hardiman, General Partner at DCVC, said:
True quantum utility will be unlocked by companies that are relentlessly focused on the scalability of their machines. Universal Quantum's modular architecture addresses the hardest challenges in scaling ion trap systems. Quantum is a global race, and we are pleased to back a team with genuine standing across Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America.
In the announcement, Bill Bartee, Managing Partner at Main Sequence, said:
What sets Universal Quantum apart is its ability to win major contracts at this stage of development. In a sector where hype and hyperbole are running far ahead of commercial reality, Universal Quantum has built a paying customer base that includes some of the world’s most demanding scientific and government institutions, and has done so before most competitors have shipped any working hardware.
In the announcement, Evren Bilimer, Managing Director at Invus, said:
We believe quantum computing will be one of the defining technologies of the coming decades, and that the companies which reach utility-scale will be those that combine deep technical capability with commercial discipline. Universal Quantum stands out for the rigour of its engineering roadmap and for having funded that roadmap through real customer contracts. We are pleased to deepen our commitment to the quantum ecosystem by backing this team.
If you're researching potential backers in this space:
Universal Quantum was founded by Professor Sebastian Weidt and Professor Winfried Hensinger from the University of Sussex and has grown into an engineering operation spanning sites across three continents with more than 100 technical staff.
In the announcement, Dr Sebastian Weidt, CEO and co-founder of Universal Quantum, said:
Universal Quantum’s progress reflects our partners’ belief that we represent one of the most credible paths to quantum computing at scale. This round unites an extraordinary group of investors from the world’s most important pools of capital around a single mission: delivering utility-scale quantum computing.
The raise highlights two concurrent trends in the European quantum ecosystem: increasing participation from long-horizon institutional capital, and a shift toward backing companies that present a clear engineering route to scale and paying customers. Universal Quantum’s emphasis on modular hardware and its sizeable government contract differentiate it from firms still focused on lab-scale demonstrations.
For the UK and Europe, the deal is a reminder that hardware-heavy quantum ventures require patient capital and cross-border partnerships. If Universal Quantum can translate its modular approach into reproducible, manufacturable systems, the company — and the wider ecosystem — will be better placed to compete with state-backed initiatives in North America and Asia.
