Battery production is a bottleneck for the electric vehicle and energy storage transition. Governments and industry are investing to build domestic capacity, but manufacturers face a familiar tension: scale up quickly while avoiding quality lapses that can create safety risks, production delays and material waste. Diagnostics that surface what is happening inside cells during formation could reduce scrap, speed throughput and improve safety — outcomes that matter to suppliers, OEMs and policymakers pushing to lessen reliance on overseas manufacturing.
AcouBatt builds acoustic emission sensors that listen for electrochemical and mechanical activity inside cells during manufacture. Those signals are fed to AI models that the company says can distinguish meaningful events from background noise and indicate when key formation processes have completed.
The company says the system can shorten formation times by up to 30% by identifying precisely when a cell has stabilised, and that it can detect early signs of defects that would otherwise remain hidden until later testing or field use. AcouBatt is positioning the technology for factory floors but also for battery energy storage installations and, potentially, electric vehicles, where early detection of underperforming or failing cells could avoid safety incidents or operational disruption.
Sensors and models are currently being trialled at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, where AcouBatt is benchmarking performance ahead of a planned commercial rollout next year. The underlying research was developed at UCL’s Electrochemical Innovation Lab as part of the Faraday Institution-backed SafeBatt project.
The round was led by Creator Fund, with participation from Ada Ventures. UCL Ventures supported the company’s creation and commercialisation work.
Creator Fund led the pre-seed cheque, citing the need for better factory-level visibility as battery demand grows faster than manufacturers’ ability to maintain quality at scale. Ada Ventures participated to back a diagnostics approach that could cut waste during the lengthy formation stage. UCL Ventures acted as a university commercialisation partner, helping translate lab research into a product being tested at UKBIC.
The new capital is earmarked for hiring engineers, advancing AI models and scaling pilot projects with battery manufacturers.
